Starlight Reserve · Sierra de Francia
San Martín del Castañar lies within the Sierra de Francia Starlight Reserve, one of the darkest and cleanest skies in Castilla y León. Here are several ways to enjoy it, from our accommodation with its own telescope to public spots where you can look up at the sky on your own.
🏡 Our accommodation: The Astronomer's Attic
Sleep under the sky of the Sierra. It has a private terrace and its own telescope to observe the stars at your own pace, without leaving home. For 1 to 4 people.
🌌 El Maíllo Astronomical Viewpoint (free, public)
In the neighbouring village of El Maíllo, the Salamanca Provincial Council has opened a viewpoint designed for skywatching: a circular plaza with a telescope area, reclined bleachers for lying back and looking up, solstice and equinox totems, a sundial, and panels with QR codes. Free access.
✨ Free stargazing in the village
Being in a Starlight zone with minimal light pollution, on any clear night you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye from the viewpoints of San Martín del Castañar. Free and open to everyone.
Astrotourism shines especially in autumn and winter, with long, clear nights. Tip: avoid full-moon nights, dress warmly, and give your eyes a few minutes to adjust to the darkness.
