San Martín del Castañar: Medieval, Natural... and With Wine!
If you can picture a place where cobbled streets whisper stories, the forests invite you to get a little lost, and the wine makes you feel wise (if only for the toast), then San Martín del Castañar was made for you. Tucked into the heart of the Sierra de Francia — that little natural gem in southwestern Salamanca — it's officially recognised as a Historic-Artistic Site and surrounded by stunning nature within the Béjar and Francia Sierras Biosphere Reserve. This village is perfect for a getaway with a flavour of adventure, culture... and Rufete grape wine!
🏙️ Walking through the old town
This village isn't just admired — it's discovered on foot. Narrow lanes, balconies heavy with flowers, and stone walls that seem to have spent centuries listening in on secrets. San Martín is dotted with more than 60 flower boxes bearing traditional sierra words and sayings, turning every stroll into a little cultural adventure.
And before moving on, a mandatory stop: the local bakery, where perronillas, hornazos and other handmade treats are still made exactly as they've always been — a real tradition in the Sierra's gastronomy.
🏰 Castle, town walls and parade ground
The 15th-century castle looks down over the old town from above, and it's more than just a wall: inside it holds a small historic cemetery, a reminder that this was also a place to remember those who had gone.
At the foot of the castle stands one of the oldest bullrings in Spain, built in the fortress's former parade ground, with stone walls and wooden stands that carry you straight back in time.
From the castle's lookout points you can watch the Béjar, Candelario and Francia mountain ranges melt into the sky on the horizon — a view that wins over anyone looking for landscape and calm.
⛪ Parish church
The village church is part of the traditional architectural heritage and deserves an unhurried visit to take in the details of its construction, built up over several centuries and blending traditional sierra styles.
🌉 Bridge, park and natural pool
Very close to the village entrance stands the stone bridge crossing the Francia river, a historic crossing point tied to old roads and traditional routes. Right beside it, in the summer months, you'll find a pleasant recreational area with a little riverside bar and a natural pool: a cool, relaxed plan, perfect for a swim, a drink, and a rest after walking or hiking nearby.
🌿 Nature in its purest form
San Martín is part of the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Natural Park, a protected area within the Natura 2000 Network and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2006.
The sierra is home to emblematic species such as the black vulture, the black stork and even the Iberian emerald lizard, along with plenty of birds and small forest creatures, visible if you take your time to look.
Among the signposted trails, some combine art and heritage with nature, like the Asentadero Path – Bosque de los Espejos (Forest of Mirrors), with sculptures and artworks woven into the rural landscape.
🎮 Explore the village through play... and uncover a mystery
Exploring San Martín can be even more fun: there's a free interactive tourist game that invites you to turn on your phone's GPS and follow clues through different stops around the village to uncover the mystery of a 16th-century local who vanished without a trace.
No installs, no sign-ups: just complete the challenges, scan the hidden QR codes and uncover fragments of a story that will make you see the village with new eyes.
🍷 La Bodega Medieval: unique, different, and by reservation only
La Bodega Medieval isn't a typical wine-tourism experience: it's half-buried in the heart of the village, tied to the historic ways of producing, storing and transporting wine in the sierra, and it only opens by reservation — which makes it a landmark slow-tourism visit in the region.
Here you get close to centuries-old winemaking culture with your hands, your eyes and your curiosity. It isn't a modern working winery, but a door into the past, where every space tells a story that doesn't leave anyone who experiences it in person unmoved.
🏡 Los Nietos de Pura
The rural house for groups (8–10 people) is more than just a place to sleep: it offers modern comforts, spacious rooms to rest in, and common areas to linger over a meal or plan the next stop on the tourist game.
For those arriving by bike, there's secure storage space, so you can enjoy the routes we've prepared through the village and the sierra without a worry.
Its location makes it easy to reach all of San Martín del Castañar's activities, turning every stay into a shared experience surrounded by nature and historic heritage.
🍲 Featured restaurant: Porta Coeli
Not far from San Martín, the Porta Coeli restaurant is one of those places you remember for its careful cooking (especially its artisan rice dishes) and its panoramic views over the Sierra de Francia. It's the perfect plan after a day of exploring.
🌅 In short
